In the old days you could get a site wide from another site and every link would count towards your ranking...

Of course if you had loads of the them you used to get great ranking but google's algo catchs this.. Basically if someone links to you on every page its likely to only be worth 1-2 links for say 1,000's

Of course site wides are worth alot in regards to traffic but not worth the same regarding ranking..

Google and alike looks for pattens..

If you link to google from every page then thats you giving google a site wide and vice versa..

They are worth it but not for seo purposes. They can give you traffic but will help the same way in seo as one or at most two links from that site. It means when you get a site wide link on a website, only 1 or 2 links will be considered by search engines and rest of them will not be counted by search engine.

I think a couple of site-wides is O.K. but don't pay to much for them after all even though it might be 6000 backlinks it is still only one vote of confidence towards your site, you are better of getting lot's of different sites to link to you .
