Domain Age and Registration

I am helping a friend who had been screwed by his prior designer.
Since the designer was in charge of registering the domain, he put his own contact information under "Technical" and "Administration" in the domain's registration.

Now, I am aware of some of the precautions as far as transferring domains and details (i.e. sandbox), however, I cannot recall any information regarding changing contact information on a current domain.
In my mind I wouldn't think that it should make any difference as firms may relocate / hire different techs, but again, in my mind I should also be #1...:p

Anyone minds shedding some light on the issue?
