I did not think this mattered very much. Does it? Can I use the a lower case version of the keyword in my meta and stats and then get the same search ranking if they are capitalized in my text?

No wories about search engines, they don't destinguish between uppercase and lowercase. Only humans do, and research has shown that capatalizing the first letters of you main keywords draws more attention.

If this is for ad campaigns, you can with benefit use keyword tools (http://www.micro-sys.dk/products/keyword-research/) to cover all variations.
E.g. to combine two tumblers:
List1:
WordA_FromList1
WordB_FromList1
List2:
WordA_FromList2
WordB_FromList2
gives:
WordA_FromList1 + WordA_FromList2
WordA_FromList1 + WordB_FromList2
WordB_FromList1 + WordA_FromList2
WordB_FromList1 + WordB_FromList2
And then cover all permutations of all phrases, e.g:
"WordA_FromList1 + WordA_FromList2"
becomes:
WordA_FromList1 + WordA_FromList2
WordA_FromList2 + WordA_FromList1

Upper case or Lower case in keywords doesn't really matter.
What matters is the correct spelling of your KW...
