Something is definitely up, with COMPETATVE KEYWORDS - some new ALGOs - but not an update overall ... just for heavily SEO'd queries...

http://www.rankpulse.com/browse.htm?sort=score

It is backfiring because Google - for the first time in ages - is NOT on page one for SEARCH ENGINES - and near the bottom for SEARCH ENGINE

Google's efforts appear to be ELIMINATING SPAM and SEO'ed Black Hats - but NOT improving overall RELEVANCY :tsk:

Yeah - there's too many spammy sites linking to Google... Shouldn't have submitted to all those link farms, Matt :D

Still on first page for search engine (http://www.google.com/search?q=search%20engine). Technically, Google is a search engine and not multiple search engines. :)

I doubt it will hurt them much, and it does show the integrity of their algorithm IMO .

It's not on my first page of results. But… I do have the “Personalized Results” activated.

This is surprising to me because Google is set to be my IE home page. !?!
I would think it would be in the #1 spot given the fact I use Google several times per day.

My results for Search Engine look like this.

Search Engine Watch
AltaVista
Dogpile
Lycos
MSN
My Excite
WebCrawler
Yahoo!
Meta Crawler
Dice.com (I’ve never even heard of them)

Google is on the top of my second page, right above Search Engine Showdown.

I do visit Search Engine Watch daily. Yahoo! Sometimes, MSN rarely, but the rest make no sense at all.

The Search Engine Roundtable is in the middle of page 8!!!
It's below Fastweb.com (whoever they are.)
I come here several times a day. What’s up with that?

I never realized how bad the Personalized Results suck until just now.
This is an eye opener!

This reminds me of a TV episode I saw where someone’s TIVO thinks he’s Gay and records all the wrong shows for him.

Dave.

But still, "search engine" is more relevant to a Google, Yahoo!, MSN.

What happens when you search for "search engine blog"

Personalized search is way new and they have a long way to go. It is cool to see that this site is #8 for search engine on your page, very cool.

Sorry Barry,

You are burried on PAGE #8 not #8 for the keyword Search Engine (Way below 7 1/2 pages of mostly crap that I never visit and don’t even have the phrase Search Engine in the title.

For the keyword Search Engine Blog you are the last result on the first page. There are some good blogs above you but I usually only visit them when following a link from your site.

Oh well…

Are you using http://www.google.com/psearch ?

I definately noticed something around the 28th, alot of terms I've been working on started to appear (finally).

It was somekind of algo shift and not a full blown update.

As for Google being at the bottom of page 1. I see nothing wrong with that. I usually link to a site using their URL and not keywords (unless they really deserve it ;P)

I’m sure I am…

I use the Google Reader to help me keep up on all my SEO Blog feeds and my industry other news etc.

My SERP page has a link that says this.
Turn OFF Personalized Search (Beta) for these results »

Both you and Google move up a few notches for relevant searches after I delete all cookies, files and browser history. Otherwise, the results are similar.

Thanks,
Dave.

I think most of the personalized data is stored within Google itself. As long as your logged into your account AND use the toolbar than Google is recording what you like. Setting a default homepage shouldnt really affect it much considering there is so much spyware/malware/toolbars that automatically alter that setting. It would end up slightly skewed.

I think they also mix in alot of "related" info from other user profiles. Basically group everyone together that have a similar interest. Kind of like Amazon's "Other users that bought this product also bought this...." That could explain the sites you arent familiar with.

Personalized search will never work if the results only display sites you know of because you'll just end up in a full circle and never discover anything new. So grouping is a smart way to go.
