I agree, Yahoo focuses more on onpage optimization. If you want to get better SERP, participating in answers.yahoo.com would be a great help.

Find the keyword you want to target and optimize your copy for that keyword(s). Yahoo like onsite way more than google does.

how does it differ from goolge SE?

The major difference between Yahoo & Google SE is: Google likes more Off Page Stuff, whereas Yahoo likes On Page Stuff.

You can rank handsomely with optimization of on page factors. To give your quick notes integrate your targeted KWs in Title Tag (most Important), Header tag, Anchor text of Internal Navigation, URL of page, Formatting Text (Strong bold, italic, underline, etc.) etc.

I hope that helps.

Improve more on the onpage (title, description, meta, etc.) factors to be able to rank well on Yahoo SERPs. Add more keyword rich content as well. If you have a budget, submit to Yahoo's directory. That will definitely help you in the Yahoo SERPs.

I am definitely concern about this, do paid submission in Yahoo Directory really helps in SERPs?

I am definitely concern about this, do paid submission in Yahoo Directory really helps in SERPs? It does. It is regarded as a very strong link by Yahoo in their algo - for the obvious reasons ;) You'd see a very noticeable boost in Yahoo's SERP after being included in their directory. IMO, its expensive, but should you have a budget for it and want to do good in Yahoo SERPs - it is an option.

1. Build Quality Content first and formost.
2. Make your website user and SE friendly, using text links instead of javascript, make it neat and make it with structure.
3. Yahoo does particularily like rss feeds from sites, so if you can include an rss feed for your site which you can update.
4. If you like to build links, then build backlinks just as you would normally, in a sensible manner.
5. Submit some QUALITY articles to article directories.
6. Keep updating your content.
7. Repeat steps 1-7

To get Ranking in Yahoo, most important thing is title and description.
target your main keywords in title and description. also get back links from articles, directories and from other sites and be careful to use your main keyword as anchor tag during link building.

These are steps i am following to get good ranking in Yahoo. and have got little big success in ranking.
