By domain rank, I mean the rank of the main page of the website...i.e

the url---www -domain dot com

And page rank is the rank for the sub pages...i.e

---www-domain dot com/about.html ...etc

Well, root123, to be frank I do not have any official information from Google about such thing as 'domain rank' (as you explained it) to be of existance in their algo.

But I can say that your concept of 'domain rank' is very close to what is rumored to be 'trust rank' of a web site.

So it is rumored (no official yes/no from Google) that Google has a number of web sites that are trusted a great deal by this search engine. And these trusted sites have a bigger freedom of actions without punishments for them.

For example, if you start linking from your fresh site to all types of sites in all niches, Google can think that you are just trying to shamelessly gain rank by link exchange and will not give much rank improvement for your site. But if Yahoo.com links to sites in any niche - I don't think they will have any problems in Google ranks? And not only because they are big. Their history is huge, they are trusted resource. And everything published on their site is supposed to have more trust in the eyes of Google.

No one knows the list of trusted sites. Or if it exists in reality. But even if it would exist, Google will not share it, because this will ruin the whole concept as everybody in the net would try to get at least a backlink from one of the trusted site.

But in my opinion any site that have 3-5 or more years of successful internet history, that is nicely indexed by Google (deeply and updated with nice frequency), that are developing - they are trusted sites.

P.S. After reading this pack of info, please keep in mind that I cannot really prove if this "trust rank" exist. But I think it might be quite logical that this trust rank is another puzzle in Google algo that can help to improve their search algorithm. If you wish, you can read my idea about page rank vs trust rank vs relevancy in this post (http://link-exchange-tips.blogspot.com/2006/11/link-exchange-myths-relevancy-trust.html).

Wanted to point out that "Trustrank" is a term first written about by a Yahoo! employee named Jan Pedersen along with Zoltan Gyongyi and Hecto Garcia Molina from Stanford University. They wrote a paper called " Combating Web Spam with TrustRank.

The concept was put into a patent application and later granted. Yahoo owns it now. Barry wrote about this last year here,

(since I STILL can't post URL's for some reason, here's the link without the www)

For example, if you start linking from your fresh site to all types of sites in all niches, Google can think that you are just trying to shamelessly gain rank by link exchange and will not give much rank improvement for your site.

It would only be a link exchange if those sites linked back wouldn't it? Otherwise with you linking out it's just that - outbound links which doesn't play a large (if any) role in determining rank.

Google is pretty open about whom it considers a trusted or quality site, it's what their PageRank algorithm is based on.

Page Rank is only one of many ranking factors that separate otherwise similar domains. Like yours, my domain has a PR of 6, yet it ranks No. 1 worldwide for many keywords.

PageRank is one of the methods Google uses to determine a page's relevance or importance. Pagerank fraud is becoming a serious problem. It is achieved when offending websites use a 301 or 302 redirects that point their sites to sites with a high Pagerank.
