Newbie here - any words of wisdom would be GREATLY appreciated.

Ok - I've complete keyword research and I'm at a speed bump and need guidance from you guys as to where to go from here.

I've found keywords and phrases and results look like this for the keywords:

49,000 monthly keyword searches
12,000 monthly keyword searches
5,000 monthly keyword searches
800 monthly keyword searches
300 monthly keyword searches

I know that I could focus on the 300 montly searched keyword and may end up ranking well on Google for this - but how could I ever grow in this business. I want (like we all do) as much traffic as possible but I don't currently have backlinks from major PR sites, Yahoo directory, etc. nor the age of my site to get on the first page with the likes of these who are on the first page of Google for the 49,000 monthly search keyword/phrase.

I guess my main question is - If I start out using the lower competitive keywords for a lower rate of traffic - would I then LATER change every single webpage title tag and target keywords to the ones that are getting searched more frequently after I've acquired mass/quality back links??

What's a good target monthly search number volume for keyword results for a newbie building a website to start with if the competition is huge? 300, 1000, 5000??

Is there any "quality" Introduction to SEO book/course any of you use to learn from as a newbie?

One last question - I don't understand all this technical stuff as I'm not a programmer and typically use pagebuilder programs as I don't know how yet to make a website otherwise.

If I were to go back to college and seek a computer related degree that best matches the field of SEO work - should I choose computer science, programming, or what??

Thank you for your time and any help you can give!

Hello Wisdomseeker,

Here are My 2 Cents.

Donot go for the short phrases, and get your traffic
from the long tail of search. The tail of search is
indeed very long tail. On one of my sites, I get only
0.2 % of traffic from one word searches, and the rest
from 2,3,4 or more words.

If I were to go back to college and seek a computer related degree that best matches the field of SEO work - should I choose computer science, programming, or what??

SEO work requires common sense and involves all round work, ,
continuous study, and remotely to do with programming.

Google for "26 steps to 15k a day" and you will find a basic
guideline.

Thank you for giving your time and attention to my ?(s) - I'll definitely put it to good use and I'm sure it will bless many who read it.

You obviously have been gifted with wisdom to understand the true meaning of success. :)

It is better to give than to receive.

Sometimes it can be tough to remember that in our pursuit of financial independence - I'm humbly reminded that we will always be dependent on something that is greater than ourselves.

Thanks again!!

I suggest targetting one keyword. But start of with optimising for a long phrase containing your keyword. This will supply you with traffic. If you have good content people will start linking to you. They'll probably use your longer keyword for the anchor tekst, but hey, your main keyword is in there.

Also by doing this you wil slowly built momentum: gaining more backlins, higher PR (handy for exchanging links to sites with higher PR) and more direct traffic (maybe other webmasters looking for articles to discuss and link to in their blogs).

Participate in forums. Spend an hour every day submitting to directories and just being active in your 'niche'.

Add more pages to your site on the same subject and eventualy, eventualy, you'll become known for a 'reliable site' about you 'keyword'.

It'll take time though. Don't give up.
