Achieving top 10 ranks in natural search engine rankings can boost your traffic for free. You will not have to pay per click. In my case for example, about 80% of our traffic comes from natural (not the paid) search engine listings because we have so many keywords where we rank high.

One thing to note however is the changing algorithms of the search engines. With Google's Big Daddy changes for example, you need to be very careful with who you link to. If you engage in a link building campaign be it using an automated software or an SEO company doing it for you, be careful that you link only to sites related to you. Artificial boosting of links is now a no-no.

In Matt Cutt's blog explaining how Google views links, he gave an example of why a real estate site suddenly lost pages on Google after Big Daddy was completed

Getting links from relevant sites is certainly the way to go, but there's no proof that Googlebot knows a paid link it when it sees it. Getting paid links from blogs for example is still a good way to go. If someone gets penalized, it's most likely because the got greedy or reported by someone else.

Its true I paid a company in India to build links for me and shortly after noticed I had lost several hundred links. I do wonder how they decide what is related and what is not.

I think you don't have to spend lots of money just got link just link your site to a related site, forums and try also to find free one way directories to submit with.

Out sourcing your work to India was a bad move. :) you probably thought hum what a great deal all of those back links for only $19.99  well there you have it. Backlinks have to happen with time. You have to build relationships with people and make sure whomever is doing your backlinks that they use white hat methods. Basically not a link farm, no reciprocal unless you want your site to look like a link farm. ;) And last but not least always make sure you link with PR 4 and higher. cheers

I disagree with you that with cheap prices you get cheap services its just that whom you choose.Seen many US based companies taking SEO jobs at alarming prices but you dont get the desired results. The fact about SEO is that you need to choose the best company you may get it cheap whether US or INDIA.And btw just becz you outsource your work to india you will get bad service thats quite bad thinking

Thanks to brought BigDaddy to stage again, I think Google now is even more complicated that what it was after BigDaddy (more than two years from now)

Good point. There are some obvious scenarios that would arouse suspision in the eyes of the SE's. Site-wide links are an example that may endanger your site.

I always advice some clients to buy links for traffic concern and not for SEO benefits. It should always be that way IMO to be on the safer side of things.

My experience has been that sitewide links can be a problem. Google seems to equate these with paid text links. You can still purchase links, just don't use a sitewide set-up.

Simple solution, just dont buy links. If you employing someone to do link building on your behalf, i.e an seo company then make sure you understand their methods and the site that partner with. Some site owners see cheap links and dont question it when bad link building can actually be detrimental to your website.
