Ahh OPD... Get in with them and you in with Google. They power several other directories.. including Google's! They are like the left hand!

Hmmm, that was then, this is now. I wonder if Google Directory is even updated anymore nowadays.

It is called "Open", because - theoretically - everyone can apply to become an editor and help build it.

What do you mean that was then and this is now? I'm pretty sure Google directory is still current... at least earlier this year.

Directories are just not such a big deal to Google anymore. Not even their own directory.

When was the last time you saw one rank high on the search results pages for some "normal" query?

Today..... (search google for "online grocery store") but your right about directories not being as big of a deal n e more.

I just think that the OPD and Y! are different breeds of directories. It legitimizes a site big time.

Google started its initial crawl of the web by using the contents of the Open Directory Project (DMOZ). Some directories (such as DMOZ) require manual checking before a site is submitted, which means that a larger degree of trust is ascribed to links from these locations.

It's certainly worth submitting to DMOZ and the Yahoo Business Directory.

Dmoz is google directory and this is good , if you are submitting your site to this directory as google will crawl it soon if it is proper than you are going to get good quality links.

Dmoz was dealt with a negative blow when it was discovered that some of the workers were taking bribes in return they would accept the bribers website into the DMoz directory.

I don't think that DMoz ever fully recovered from that scam.
