Is G shiftin' a bit?

I've been building quality one way links to a very old site for an extremely competitve term over the last few months. Over this time the site increased its ranking for this term by going from the 17th page in G to the 6th. Yesterday, I checked its ranking and it dropped back to the 13th page? Has G been moving around lately. Is there any known explanation for this?

Yes, there has been some shifting. Check the blog homepage, two posts on that this morning.

My traffic dropped slightly since yesterday so yes there is a shift. I had 800k pages thrown out of the index yesterday but they appeared back today so it should be over this weekend.
