The amount of blog-spammers out there continually amazes me. For every real comment on my blog, I'd estimate I get about 65-80 spammers. Just today, I deleted 31 comments, all pharmacy/casino spamzors.

And my blog gets pitiful traffic. I can't imagine what it's like for people with serious traffic.

By the way, does marking comments as spam do anything in wordpress?

Of the 2,859 real comments, I have junked 76,793 (some have been outright deleted, so I dont have that number) since I began tracking. I believe that was since Jan 1. 2006.

I've been lucky so far (or just unpopular). Only get a spam comment once in a blue moon. (Now I've probably jinxed myself).

Let me clarify, most of my spam comments (99.5%) are automatically "junked."

My comment spam goes through phases. For the past few weeks I was getting a bunch every day but not it's dwindled down to about 1/10 of that amount. But if history reflects the future, in another week or so it'll pick back up again.

Interesting topic to say the least. I had a member try to spam my website.
He kept sending in non related sports articles. He kept doing this time
after time. Then one day I decided to contact him by phone. Told him if he spams one more time I will file a lawsuit aganst him. He has stopped spamming :)

I launched a blog at the start of the year, I was spending more time clearing the spam off than actyually writing anything. I just stopped it and launched a new website instead with the information.

I think nearly every comment on my blog is spam. Q. How harmful are spam comments to a blog?

Very: they dilute the link power you wanna have flow to your own links. And also, they are often unrelated to the post in question, which means that your article might lose "focus" in the view of the search engines.

On some of my blogs I don't really mind tho.

One is really hilarious: It's a blog post without any text and those spambots are claiming that "I'm providing good info" or that it "reminds them of recent news about Craigslist". Hahaha :D muppets. They are so funny, I'm leaving the comments on (with all the links edited out of course, even 'profile' links :))

Its difficult to say since WordPress does a pretty good job of filtering the spam out. Of the ones that make it through, I'd say 1 spam for every 10 real comments.
