trying to decide if we should create sub-domains across our site for specific categories; eg: noun.sitename.com vs. sitename.com/noun.

the site is large, 150K+ pages, and has about 15 categories. which way should we go here --> any pros/cons to this approach? majority of organic search traffic is currently through google.

any research or data to support one position over the other?

thx!

A subdomain is a completely separate site as compared to site.com/folder. I would go with site.com/folder approach as it will keep me from sandbox and other problems.

Well, some people still think that both are the same.

I'd rather have one website with 150k pages than 15 sites with 10k pages each. Using subdomains will basicaly split your site into 15 tinier sites which means 15 times more work collecting backlinks.

Keep it all on one site and it's grow alot faster than 15 mini sites.
