You should create multiple XML sitemap. In one sitemap, you should have 500 urls . Name it as sitemap.xml, sitemap1.xml etc .

Because you have a big website with lacs of pages. You have to create more than one sitemaps. Create different sitemaps based on different folders in website.

I always add a sitemap.xml to all my sites

I always add a sitemap with the tool the program I used for the website,such as wordpress,it has a plugin for sitemap.

Your big website need more than one sitemaps files. Your sitemaps files must not be more than 10 MB large or contain more than 50,000 URLs.
