Check this domain:

www.optimizacija.com

Its my domain, it meens something like optimisation.com, it has only one word on page, optimizacija.com.

check now serps for "optimizacija":

Google for "optimizacija" (http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=optimizacija)
Allintitle:optimizacija (http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=allintitle%3Aoptimizacija)
Allinanchor:optimizacija (http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&q=allinanchor%3Aoptimizacija&btnG=Search) (nowhere)

Check now BL with Yahoo Siteexplorer:

http://siteexplorer.search.yahoo.com/search?ei=UTF-8&p=http://www.optimizacija.com&bwm=p&bwms=p&searchbwm=Explore+URL

It says, there is no BL for this domain :).

If you check other domain, they all have a lot more BL with "optimizacija" as anchor. Yes, its not big competition but again.

So its probably domain name or title tag or both. Any other explanation?

If you followed the v7ndotcom elursrebmem contest, you'd see that it does seem to matter to some extent, at least. It's definitely not a guarantee of a good ranking, and you can certainly rank without it, but does it matter? Yeah, it can.

As far as I go, domain name does not help much in SERPs. Its the content, meta tags and keywords in the page and sometimes[ very rarely] in the domain matter.

Thats my point of view, I may be wrong though.

Admans.

There was also a MASSIVE number of links in the V-E SEO contest that probably had some bearing on the SERP's ... ;-)
