We had been thinking that we should seek only relevant links - i.e. not link farms. Yesterday I read a piece by Brad Callen where he suggested accepting any link, to get the numbers up. I respect Brad's opinion but wondered if others agree?

According to me, quality of backlink is important. When your backlinks are relevant & high quality then those backlinks helps alot to rank high in search engines. So while doing link building it is important to focus on quality of backlink.

I have a site that is very high in Google, but has far fewer links than competing sites. The person I designed the site for is an author, and got book reviews from Ask, WSJ, NY Times & others, with links from each. Good quality links are worth more, because they are harder to come by. The easy way is never the best.

Quality. Low relevance will do, but go for high PR. Though my experience says quantity also goes a long way. Go for whatever link u can get ur hands on . just avoid gambling , porn and such sites

Quality first. And PageRank has NOTHING to do with the definition of quality.

Do both but focus on the relevancy of the links and avoid link farms altogether. The more quality links the better.

Hmm, I've been seeing "Lots" of sites topping the SERPs with lots (thousands) of backlinks to irrelevant sites.. how's this happening? these sites are a part of co-ops. Just wondering.

I usually find links pretty hard to come by for the sites I'm working on, and rarely feel that a link is of sufficiently low quality that it would do more harm than good.
There are certain things you shouldn't do however, such as blog or forum spamming. My reasoning for this is...
1. You'd probably be spamming forums and blogs that your customers read... this might be the first time they've come across the site or brand, and it would be an awful first impression.
2. If the SEs become aware of it, you're screwed.
That's about the only avenue I wouldn't take nowadays. I'll happily accept most other links so long as they are reasonably relevent or neautral (such as directories).

Quality then comes quantity :)
First go for Authority links then go for quantity of links like links from article and directory pages.

I agree, quality is what to look for when focusing on anything related to SEO, link building, & content - even when looking for services/ outsourcing/ inhouse related to your site as a business.

We all agree that quality is greater than quantity... But you must have give points on your Content First... "Content in King" Because why all of us go for the Quantity its because we all look for the relevancy of a certain sites thats why I'll Focus on the content first.

It’s really hard to make blanket statements about what works and what doesn’t when it comes to linking, ranking and the Web in general. The link marketing needed to promote sites in competitive spaces is vastly different than those in less competitive areas; you can’t say you need quality over quantity in most of these cases. As a matter of fact, the reverse is usually true. In competitive industries, she who has more links usually rules and they don’t necessarily have to be ‘quality’ links.
IMO, part of the reason there’s so much confusion and speculation about linking and how it affects rank is because we talk about strategies and tactics as if they apply to the Web/Net as a whole. The reality is – not all sites need the same thing and not all links are created equal.
There are givens I think - good content well promoted and updated frequently will attract an audience over crap any day. But even good content needs a wizard behind the curtain pulling strings to keep it going.
And sometimes, depending on where you are, and who you’re keeping company with, that means might makes right.

I wouldn't spend too much time going for off topic poor weight links, but that doesn't mean to ignore them if they're available..... any link to your site can help, so if they're offered or easily gotten you might as well get them. If you're going to put serious time into link building though you will get more bang for your buck by focusing on on topic quality link sources.

If you are offered with any link building services, always prioritize QUALITY. It is more effective than having a huge number of irrelevant links.

Quality not Quantity
only Quality link ll help you in optimization.
But I think that if you have good quality and quantity then your site will rank very soon because serach engines give importance to the sites which contain more information about the searched Titles. That's why quality as well as quantity both are important for SERPs.
IMO quality and quantity are the top factors in optimizing a site. Make sure to have a good content and it should be your priority... coz it could attract links

You mean to say that our contents should be beneficial for other sites in order to get links. But what about the page rank of that sites. It should greater or not.

According to me When an SEO company focuses on quantity over quality, they focus on getting a high volume of links into your website, without any regard for the quality of content provided on the pages that are going to be linking to you.

I'll go for the quality ones.
Having a huge of trash links is useless, SE wouldn't add weight on it or just count is as normal link if its not quality
Its upto you actually, how you manage quality and quantity.. Whether it be quantity, go for only the relevant things (both content and links). Will surely gain in search engines.
