I have a very nice old women who has asked me to get her site to the top Yahoo for a keyword that is getting about 11,000 searches monthly accoarding to overture. It’s a cat website. I think she has been taken advantage of by other SEOs and I really want to help her out.

I’ve analyzed the backlinks of sites that currently rank on the first few pages in yahoo for this keyword. I started building links to the old ladies site at the end of March, right in the middle of the that Yahoo update. Although I haven gotten many really valuable backlinks to the site, I certainly have gotten more and similar quality links than some of the sites that rank in the first few pages for this keyword in Yahoo. Initially her sites ranking increased a bit, but within the last couple weeks it has dropped back to the 10th page in Yahoo.

I’m wondering if the recent and current Yahoo Updates are what preventing this site from breaking into the top 5 pages and beyond. If so, once the update is over would I probably see the increased rankings? The keyword is not very competitive; there are sites in the top 20 with less than 75 backlinks. In fact, I just checked, the 19th ranked site has less than 15 backlinks and they are all PR 3s or less! What is going on here?!?!?! I’ve build over 75 links, optimized with the right anchor text, but not obvious, and the site wont break the top 100?? I’ll admit many of the links I’ve built are forum, blog, and guestbook links, however most of them are related sites, plus that shouldn’t really matter for such a uncompetitive keyword anyways. I even linked to it from my myspace page. Heck, I own the 6th ranked site on Yahoo for the term ‘coffee beans’ and almost 100% of the links are from an automated link exchange network.

In summery, the site had 45 natural links before I started working on it, now it has about 80. The extra 35 I’ve build have been mostly theme related blog, forum and guestbook links. The site hasn’t increased much at all and has been boucing around a lot. My question is for anyone who has had experience in figuring out these updates: is the problem the update and once its over the site probably will rank with the rest of the site that have comparable backlinks?

I realize I’ve taken the easy way in regards to building links, but the term is getting less than 11,000 search a month, I shouldn’t have to get a link from the International Feline Society homepage to make the cat site move up, right?

Why won’t this site increase its ranking??? Its got to be the Update, right??

This tool will give you a better indicator of how strong your links are vs your competitors...

If you are refering to the "bengal cats" site, there is some on page optimization that should be done (i.e. add h2/h3 tags, keyword rich links, add more content, site map, etc).

Hope this helps.

Thanks Brian. Always very helpful no matter which forum you help me in. I do need to finish up the on-page, but I'm still baffled by this sites ranking?? I mean, there are sites with far less link popularity and virtually no on-page optimization and still ranking on the first couple pages for this relatively uncompetitive term
