So, part of keyword research is assessing the competitiveness of a given term. To properly do so needs search data (ie; Overture suggestion tool etc…).

What data do you use in your keyword/phrase building?

I know the ‘monthly search’ data at Overture isn’t all that reliable. Many people don’t trust the numbers by WT (Word Tracker) used in the KEI calculations.

I have heard the only REAL data you can get is by running an AdWords campaign.

So, what data do you use?

I haven't found a good competitve insight tool.

I go to competitive websites to see megatags, how a competitor positions itself on a website, and do other types of manual legwork to gain as much competitive insight on the keywords I'm interested in as possible.

By 'competitiveness of a given term' do you mean:

- How much competition there is for a specific keyword?
- Which keywords are being used by your competition?

or something more like how effective a given term is.

Adgooroo has some ability to show competitors' keywords.

Ask google for the price of Adwords for a specified keyword, and by the price, you can know how the keyword is competitive or not.

Yep, Adwords is probably the most reliable, but CPC isn't the only thing to look at, just because of the simple fact that the profit margins on cars are higher than on books. A car-salesman would probably have a higher budget for advertising therefore raising the CPC, but his PR and relevant backlinks could suck and your cars-website could easily outrank him using normal SEO.

I believe you should factor in all data. CPC, Search Volume and Competition.
So that's what I did and this keyword selector tool (http://www.slowseo.com/tools/keyword_value.php) is the result.

I hope you find it usefull and all comments are greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

Zhoog

I think this is the best way. I don't trust Overture

I have been using a tool for keyword popularity information that is free. I am not sure if its the same thing, but it gives me results. The URL for the tool is http://www.freewebsubmission.com/keyword-popularity.html

Although I am not sure of it's reliability as I have not had the experience with AdWords.

It says below the input field, that it's powered by wordtracker.

I guess they have made a deal with wordtracker!

IS wordtracker very reliable in its results?

same here, i don't trust overture that much. IMO, wordtracker is better.

Thats a relief to hear. I was not sure if anyone else used wordtracker or not. Then again I am new in here, so I haven't read a lot yet either.

IMHO use every tool you can get your hands on. Its hard to trust any of the tools alone, because none are exact. If you use multiple you can rest a little easier that the results are at least more accurate than with one hopefully :p

I already told that do keyword analysis with all tools ( to whom you beleieve ) but consider only common keywords which exist in all tools.

One thing to be aware of is Wordtrackers figures are an estimate and if you are looking for very specific keywords then you will probably not find anything :(

you can always use their trial to get an idea of things!
