Link building hasn't in common with e-mail marketing. If you send an e-mail you don't build a link on web page (search engines doesn't index it). If an e-mail is unsolicited, it's a spam.

If they publish an email address for contact, I don't see any problem in contacting them with a personal (non-automated) message. Just use some common sense - if you were the one receiving the email, would you give it any consideration? If not, you should probably not send it.

If you don't want to email pick up the phone, either way you will find the best links you have ever seen that way.
And usually free/cheap

Sending beggy emails (*email marketing* - what a great notion for such an outdated technique) is over - ask people about conversions.
Now people build links in different ways. One of them is finding the pages on real, relevant sites where you can submit your link and wait until it's published. This is huge manual work, but everything can be automated. Including copy&paste on reciprocating, building of your link directory, molding it with relevant content, etc.

I've never done what I consider email marketing to build links.
However I have on multiple occassions emailed personal specific emails to webmasters asking for a link, as often as not I get it too. Of course it helps when you have a high quality site. I wouldn't try it with mortgage-debt-consolidation-viagra-penis-enlargement.com

I would also mention social networks where your profile and content is possible to give you backlinks, not many backlinks, but with reputable networls these backlinks will be of real value.
I prefer the shortcutting - right to the relevant pages, because in my testing it resulted from 40% to 80% link building conversions, and this is much better than sending emails.
Out of my experience of running shy 30 sites and around 100-150 link exchange emails that I get daily, over years I saw only one great email asking to build links.

Yes you can do it but with care. It is very sensible because most of the time it is considered as spam. so......

Hi -
I would be careful sending blind emails. Many of the sites I manage specifically state not to send emails asking for links. Look for a linking policy on prospective sites.
I report quite a few sites via Spam Cop, because I've gotten tired of useless link requests.

when requesting links, try to be personal, add the webmasers name and what you liked about their site. It shows you have taken the time to find them and analyze their website.

Email and Link Management has no common use, but it is the correct idea. Take the basic idea, but instead of using Email, create a Press Release instead. Add your basic 3 to five links to it.
Then publish the "press release" to the PR submission site as normal.
Also, many have asked me for a list, you can see these lists at http://www.catanich.com/link-popularity-enhancement.asp at the bottom of the page.

Google supports one-way link building, and it surely doesnt like link exchange in any way.
If you are serious about SEO, then consider one-way linking strategy.

Social link building is most effective.
I believe that e-mail marketing can't be considered as a link building strategy.. Better stick to the known link building methods like directory submissions, link baiting, link exchanges, article writing, blogging, etc.
