As per my knowledge:

Latent Semantic Indexing is used to discover words and phrases that are related in the context of any document or group of documents. It is also known as second layer of keyword research. LSI stands for Latent Semantic Indexing.

--> LSI is also used to perform automated document categorization.
--> Dynamic clustering based on the conceptual content of documents can also be accomplished using LSI.

One important thing LSI cannot be used to improve your search engine listings.
