Redirects
We're currently working on a new version of a site, and their web person has set up the redirects as old page going to 404, which then goes to a 301 before going to the new page.
Obviously we're trying to rectify this, but will this set up affect the potential/current ranking while me make the changes?

why not use htaccess to redirect all pages to a 301 and then dynamically redirect them to the new site. I don't think SE like 404.
