I m agree with you. If you want to indexed/promote inner links of website then taking links from authority article directory sites is Best option.

Make sure that the content that you submit to article directories differs from yours. Big article directories are trusted sites, that is why if you publish article on your site and publish the same article on article directory - then it will get indexed on this directory site sooner and the article on your site will be a duplicate content for Google.

Google discounts for duplicate content these days. Much better of setting up your own article script or blog. Having unique content is a great way to improve your rankings, adding internal links, or you could say bulking up your site (especially if you optimize those articles as landing pages).
