SEO help needed... :(

First i would like to say hi! I have been looking for a specific SEO forum for a while now and it looks great! I've looked through the forums to try get as much help as possible but i don't really know whats relevant. I have always thought SEO was purely meta tags and building backlinks ( i was very wrong ).

Can anyone guide me on the best steps to take my site to the top? Any advice will be helpful!

certainly, and thanks for the reply! In basics i am working on optimizing a site for a security company to get higher in google. I just needs loads of tips and advice on doing so. Any clearer? I know it's an open question but i am doing that in hope to get a lot of answers.

Well the first thing to do is to try and find out what keywords you want to rank for. You can use a variety of keyword suggestion tools to help you.

Done, head titles optimized, meta tags done, sitemap created and submitted to google. I'm now pointlessly submitting in pr directorys! I just think im missing something... its to easy... ????

You can try optimize your site content for important keyword phrases or write some articles + submit them. But most SEO is a bit boring. You can also try social marketing (bookmarks, news)... Or go black hat and own thousand of websites and link them (but that requires a lot of dedication and well, I haven't cared to do so)

Anyway.. How "easy" it is depends on how competitive the terms are...

If your not ranking then look at "why" sites above you rank...

its ranking... but not very well, 76th for the term the company wants, 2 keywords. The competitions not harsh but its there, about as much competition as say... roller shutters... hint hint...

Use yahoo to look at the links of the sites that rank... Get some ideas of why those links pass value..

"most" directories don't pass link juice OR pass very little..

If it was "roller shutters" then look up blogs / article regarding now "shutters" ... Maybe contact those bloggers about how cool your "shutters" are etc..

hmmm.... i thought about finding a roller shutter blog because it would gain a good backlink but no suprise in seeing that i couldn't find one how about article submission? I could get the company to write a guide or something and publish it on article sites? Would that help?

What PR should i be looking for when submitting to directorys? At the moment i'm doing nothing but above PR3, good move?
