ok its been a while, about 1 yrs that google has been making the geo updates tighter imho..
US host .com without google.co.uk serps.. A site I work on was mid to top 10 for many serps in both .co.uk and .com... Google did some geo updates really effecting the .co.uk dropping in the serps bit by bit over time.. BUT increasing at the same level bit by bit on the .com ... The US market is bigger for this client but in the last yr the traffic is about 70% of what it was from the .co.uk.. Whats working for you ? UK backlinks ? UK in the anchor ?

I have also faced tough time to get top ranks (from #2 to #1) for one of my dating site, targeted to UK. The site ranks #1 for most of my targeted keyword on a global platform, but region specific promotion looked tougher...
Is this a common phenomenon? |

You just need to make sure that you have a UK host, I think that is all you can do, the .co.uk's will inevitably perform better on Google.co.uk, IMO where the backlinks come from and mentioning UK in the anchor wouldn't make any difference, In my experience you just need to muscle the other sites with loads and loads of quality backlinks, sometimes a .com site will have to work twice as hard and have nearly twice as many quality backlinks to beat a .co.uk in UK Google even if it is UK hosted.

I do think alike. My domain (in fact that of my client) is registered in the UK and the site's extension is .co.uk.

hi,
i don't have experience with .com and .co.uk, but i have enough with .com and .it i know there's a big difference between two situations: language. here we have to pay attention to get links from italian pages because if we get much more links from english pages, Google may think our (italian) page is in english (though i can see some improvement lately). if it happens, our (italian) page can rank on google.com and disappear on google.it... aside: i don't know about people with low ranking caused by hosting out of Italy... your situation is different since language is (almost) the same, but maybe not so much. this is why i'd go for .co.uk links. |

If you want to improve your position at google.co.uk then you have take one way link from UK directories, submit site at UK search engine. To improve position at google.com then you have take one way link from Article sites.
