This just came up at the bottom of a search page:
New! Crack the Code: Play the Da Vinci Code Quest on Google. http://flash.sonypictures.com/movies/davincicodequest/ Has this been about for a while, am I going blind? |

Started on the 17th (3 days ago). It's a special cooperative deal that Google has going with Sony.

I have been getting some emails about this for the Seroundtable blog. I didn't even notice it either, and then I saw the Digg page for it. Seems pretty well known now. I am guessing they started listing the special advertising box on the Google homepage.

Google sent a message to my personal home page that was totally;
* Unwanted * Urrelevant * Unanticipated * Impersonal I do not remember signing up for these ads. Even if I did… there does not seem to be a way to make it stop or opt-out. (No "edit" link) I sincerely hope this does not become a daily intrusion. Does anyone else think this is pure Spam? Aloha, Dave. |

No not really. SPAM is alittle more intrusive. Goto Yahoo's homepage and look at all the unwanted, irrelevant, unanticipated and impersonal ads that display on there or CNN or any other sites that display CPM advertisment.

When I saw the advertisement, I felt almost like the neighbor’s dog just left me a little surprise on the front porch to clean up. (Thanks! Just what I’ve always wanted)
But you are correct… I thought about it yesterday and realized it’s a free service. If I don’t like it I can stop using it. I guess I’m spoiled by the absence of worthless distractions and advertisements on the Google home page. This is why I use Google and not MSN or Yahoo! I also believe this is the secret to there success. The advertisements you do see in the Google SERPS are usually anticipated, relevant and useful. It’s just a disapointmement.
