There's been some great research on this, most notably a paper called "Sampling Search Engine Results" delivered at the IW3C2 conference about a year ago by Andrei Broder (now at Yahoo), David Carmel (IBM Haifa Research Labs) and Aris Anagnostopoulos (Brown U.). There's a pdf of it online..sorry I don't have the link handy.
